Everything you need to know before you drop in to Whangamatā's beachside café.

Where is Blackies Cafe in Whangamata?

Blackies Cafe is the beachside cafe in Whangamata (Whangamatā), at 418 Ocean Road in Williamson Park — right behind the Whangamatā Surf Life Saving Club. If you're heading to the main surf beach, you'll walk right past us.

How close is Blackies to the beach?

About 50 metres. Walk straight off the sand and up to the counter — sandy feet are welcome. Grab a table under the sun roof and you can keep an eye on the surf while you eat.

Is Blackies dog friendly?

Yes — dogs are very welcome. All our seating is outdoors, so your dog can sit with you, and we keep water bowls out. Just note that dog rules on Whangamatā beach are set by the council and are stricter over summer, so check the signs before heading onto the sand.

Is Blackies good for kids and families?

It's one of the easiest family cafés in Whangamatā. Kids can run around Williamson Park while you finish your coffee, there's plenty of outdoor seating for big groups, and the pancakes, shakes and real fruit ice cream are always a hit.

What are Blackies' opening hours?

We're open every day from 8:00am to 2:00pm, with extended hours over the summer season. For public holiday or weather updates, check our Instagram @blackies.cafe.

What's on the menu, and are there vegan or gluten-free options?

Big breakfasts, our famous Blackies Buttie, rösti eggs benedict, acai bowls, pancakes and cheeseburgers — plus Atomic coffee, fresh date scones, shakes, smoothies and real fruit ice cream. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available; just ask at the counter.

Can I get takeaway or order online?

Yes. Our takeaway window keeps coffee and ice cream moving on busy summer days, and you can order online ahead of time using the Order online button at the top of this page.

Is there parking at Blackies?

Yes — there's free parking right out front at Williamson Park, so it's an easy stop whether you're staying in town or just passing through Whangamatā.

What is there to do near Blackies in Whangamatā?

You're right on Whangamatā's main surf beach, next to the Surf Club, with Hauturu (Clark Island) just offshore and Whenuakura (Donut Island) a popular paddle for kayakers and paddleboarders. The golf course is next door, and Port Road's shops are only a few minutes away — so Blackies is the perfect start or finish to a beach day.

Why choose Blackies over other cafés in Whangamatā?

Location, mostly — no other café in town puts you 50 metres from the surf. Add dog-friendly outdoor seating, a park for the kids, fast food even when it's busy, and a 4.3★ rating from 480+ Google reviews, and it's an easy choice for a beach-day breakfast or lunch.
